Welsh parasports athlete Funmi Oduwaiye was on track for a basketball career until a routine knee surgery went wrong. In 2022, after encouragement from the late Anthony Hughes MBE, Performance Manager of Disability Sport Wales, she transitioned to Para-athletics, focusing on shot-put and discus. The 21-year-old from Cardiff is now looking forward to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, starting on August 28th. Recently, she sat down with Xcellence magazine to discuss her career and future plans.

"X" stands for the unknown names, untold histories, and unacknowledged contributions. This work is dedicated to those who went before us, people of Xcellence.
The journey so far... Xcellence Magazine was launched in August 2022. Originally a printed publication, our distribution list is dedicated to institutions as a priority, aiming to break down systematic discrimination and stereotypes. As Wales' first magazine aimed at serving as a bridge, it connects organizations and communities that have been systematically and structurally marginalized in education, business, and mainstream media. Through collaboration, insight, access, and education, Xcellence endeavours to foster authentic equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies and practices.
Xcellence provides a platform for promoting business role models and showcasing the latest developments in education. Often, these spaces lack representation, resulting in a lack of equity and upward mobility, as well as inaccurate media reporting of marginalized groups in Wales. Our mission is to support organisations in their EDI efforts by fostering empathy, promoting understanding, and cultivating cultural competency.
