Why Media?

The impact of diverse media representation cannot be overstated. When people see themselves and their stories reflected in the media, it fosters a sense of validation and belonging. It also educates broader audiences, breaking down stereotypes and promoting understanding and empathy. In Wales, the move towards more inclusive media is helping to build a more cohesive and resilient society. Challenges and Opportunities While significant progress has been made, challenges remain.

Underrepresentation and misrepresentation of certain groups are still issues that need addressing. Financial constraints, limited resources, and entrenched industry biases can also hinder the advancement of diversity initiatives. However, these challenges present opportunities for innovation and collaboration. A recent report titled Of and for Wales – Towards a Sustainable Future for Public Interest Journalism outlines key recommendations:

Support the development of a diverse, resilient journalism workforce in Wales at all levels by developing training programmes.

  • Understand the needs of media users.

  • Guarantee that providers of public interest journalism can bid for public advertising and marketing campaigns.

We are helping to raise representation in media by running our weekly radio show, dedicated to Black-owned minority businesses. The I AM Wales podcast aims to archive the experiences of underrepresented communities. Additionally, Xcellence Magazine is the first of its kind in Wales, dedicated to showcasing the contributions of individuals and organisations that excel in various fields such as business, arts, education, and more.

By highlighting success stories and achievements, Xcellence inspires others to strive for excellence, provides role models, fosters empathy, offers insights, and helps eliminate discrimination, prompting wider communities to be curious and engaged.
