Why Education?
​After the surge of global activism in 2020, sparked by movements such as Black Lives Matter, Wales took decisive action to address education and equity. Recognising the urgent need for systemic change, the Welsh government initiated several measures to promote inclusivity and combat racism.One notable initiative was the incorporation of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic contributions into the new curriculum for Wales. This move aims to provide a more comprehensive and representative education for all students, ensuring that the diverse history and contributions of these communities are recognized and valued.According to recent research carried out by the Education Workforce Council, there are 35,545 registered teachers in Wales of which, 88% identified as White British. Teachers who identified as non-white were significantly lower, 0.4.% Asian or Asian British, 0.2.% Black or British Black and 0.5% Mixed.​
Professor Charlotte Williams OBE led a focus group in 2020 on behalf of the Welsh government where the importance of representation was reiterated. Teachers of Black Asian and minority ethnic background shared their experiences of working within the current education system.​"Teachers claimed that the lack of representation reinforced discrimination and, as a result, serious breaches of inclusion and equality of professional standards, continues to be compromised" (Williams, 2021, p.40). Furthermore, it was stated that the lack of representation of Black Asian and minority ethnic teaching staff alongside the current curriculum has consequences for Black Asian and minority ethnic pupils, which contributes to feelings of lack of belonging and aspirations and achievement" (Williams, C, 2021, p. 40).

Further findings claimed representation is an enriching experience for the whole school population.​Since the report, there has been significant progress. For instance, the former education minister called for the contributions of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities to be made mandatory in the new curriculum for Wales. This is a significant step towards a more equitable education system.​As well as DARPL (Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning) which is a Welsh Government-funded project aimed at promoting diversity and anti-racism through professional learning in Wales. This initiative focuses on providing educators and professionals with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to foster inclusive environments and challenge racial inequalities within the education system and beyond. By supporting professional development in these areas, DARPL seeks to create a more equitable and inclusive society in Wales.​
