A night to celebrate sporting xcellence.

Wales Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards - WEDSA

The Wales Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards (WEDSA) 2023 represented a watershed moment for Welsh sports, highlighting and celebrating the remarkable contributions of ethnic minority communities across the nation. Held on December 1st, 2023, at the historic Glamorgan Cricket Stadium, this event did more than honour outstanding athletes and sports professionals; it reinforced the crucial role of diversity and inclusivity in the world of sports.

This pioneering initiative was the brainchild of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), aimed at providing a platform to recognise and celebrate the achievements of these inspiring individuals. Rajma Begum, the National Sports Diversity Manager at WCVA and visionary behind the awards, emphasised:

"Over the last two decades, I have been seeing the amazing contributions people from ethnic minority backgrounds have been making in sports around their communities. But during that time, I also saw the lack of representation and recognition these people have received for their work. When I attend local and national awards, I do not see many people like me; they are very exclusive awards."

"Six years ago, I decided I wanted to organise an event focused on the contributions of ethnic minority communities in sport across Wales. Around March [2023] I had the go-ahead from Sport Wales, and it was the most exciting day for me, I was just ecstatic."

"We want to be able to hold the awards every two years. I think we also just need some time to reflect and see what learning we can take for the future."

The 2023 WEDSA awards underscored the growing recognition of the vital role ethnic minorities play in the tapestry of Welsh sports. From grassroots efforts to professional leagues, individuals from diverse backgrounds have shattered barriers and set new benchmarks for xcellence. The event not only acknowledged these achievements but also inspired future generations to chase their dreams, no matter their background.

A Night of Celebration and Inspiration

The atmosphere at Glamorgan Cricket Stadium was nothing short of electrifying as athletes, coaches, sponsors, and supporters gathered for the celebration. The ceremony put a spotlight on the importance of representation and the ongoing need to promote diversity in sports. The presence of community groups, key figures from Welsh sports organisations, and community leaders further highlighted the significance of this event.

The awards spanned several categories, each designed to recognise a unique aspect of sporting excellence within ethnic minority communities. Categories like Lifetime Achievement, Coach of the Year, Community Sport Project, and Outstanding Contribution to Sport, among others, showcased stories of dedication, perseverance, and success, making the competition both fierce and inspiring.

Honouring Excellence in Sport

One of the evening’s most eagerly awaited moments was the presentation of the Outstanding Contribution to Sport award, which went to Nooh Ibrahim, the Diversity and Inclusion Sports Development Officer at URDD. His unwavering dedication to the sports ecosystem in Wales made him a deserving recipient.

Funmi Oduwaiye, representing Wales at this year's Paralympics in Paris, was honoured with the Sportswoman of the Year award. Funmi’s journey in sports began as a basketball champion, but following routine knee surgery that ended her basketball career, her unyielding passion led her to excel in shot put. Her dedication to the sport, alongside her role as a coach and mentor to young athletes, highlighted her as a standout winner.

The Coach of the Year award was bestowed upon Nana Baah, whose innovative football coaching methods and commitment to nurturing talent in underrepresented communities have produced numerous top-tier athletes. Originally from Ghana, Nana moved to the UK for university and has since left a lasting impact on the sports world.

Rehnaz Khan was named Inspiring Individual of the Year for her dedication to fitness and personal training. For many, going to the gym can be intimidating. For women, this can add an extra layer of discomfort, and for someone like Rehnaz, who has Retinitis Pigmentosa—a degenerative eye disease that gradually leads to blindness—the challenge is even greater. Yet, she overcome these obstacles to become a Level 3 Qualified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer at Channel View Leisure Centre in Cardiff, embodying resilience and a passion for inclusivity.

The Sportsman of the Year award was presented to Curtis Hutson, a football forward who has recently joined Frome Town.

The 29-year-old forward began his career in Cardiff City’s youth ranks, earning a spot on the Wales U16s team at just 13 years old. After advancing through the Cardiff system, Hutson played for several Welsh League teams, including Port Talbot Town, Barry Town, and Penybont in the Welsh Premier Division. He also gained experience in the English football system, with stints at Newport County and Southern Premier South league rivals Merthyr Town and Redditch, both of which compete at Step 3 in the Southern Central Division.

Promoting Inclusivity and Community Engagement

The Inclusive Sport Award was presented to Exiles Together, recognising their commitment to diversity, accessibility, and inclusivity. Sponsored by SWIM Wales, this award highlighted the importance of community engagement in sports.

The WEDSA awards also paid special tribute to lifetime achievements, honouring those who have dedicated their lives to promoting diversity in Welsh sports. Steve Khaireh, a well-deserved recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award, has spent 50 years empowering youth and fostering community engagement. Through his work, Steve has touched the lives of countless young people in Butetown, Grangetown, and Riverside, many of whom have gone on to become youth workers, inspired by his example.

As a devoted volunteer at Grangetown Boys and Girls Club, Steve has led community projects that offer children and young people opportunities to engage in sports and other enriching activities, making a lasting impact on the Cardiff community.

A Vision for the Future

The success of the 2023 WEDSA awards wasn’t just measured by the accolades and recognition given but by the important conversations it sparked about the future of Welsh sports. The event highlighted the ongoing need to ensure that sports in Wales reflect the diversity of its people. By celebrating the achievements of ethnic minority communities, WEDSA 2023 set a powerful precedent for future initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and xcellence in sports.

As the night drew to a close, optimism and determination filled the air. The Wales Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards 2023 was more than just an awards ceremony; it was a celebration of the vibrant, diverse, and dynamic spirit of Welsh sports, reminding us of all that when everyone has the opportunity to succeed, the entire community thrives.

The WEDSA awards will be held bi-annually, but in the interim, the momentum will be maintained with an inspiring networking event called Unite Champions.
