Black History Wales

Updated: Jun 27

Young people, the time is now’ - the phrase that has been centring the national Black History Wales events. The month of October marks British Black History month and to celebrate that, Race Council Cymru launched a series of events recognising black success, firstly their launch at Saint Fagans on October 1st. The event brought together Afro-Caribbean food stalls, artists, businesses, and performers. The atmosphere was shared by those of all ages but, notably, invited the youth to its doors.

‘It is so cool to see everybody singing, and dancing. celebrating Black culture’ was how Gabriel, 17, from Swansea summarised the essence of the event. He said, ‘it is important for us young people to make ourselves heard, after the past’.

Anya, 11, saw the event as a great opportunity to ‘learn more about [her] ancestors’, bringing to light the very intricate connection between the older and younger generations. Kiishi, 10, whose family owned one of the food stalls, recognised the importance of all races to attend such celebrations because much of which exists today ‘were invented by black people’ and ‘everybody should learn about it’. ‘It’s crucial for all races to come and just listen because it might change your entire perspective’.

(Gabriel) stresses the communal significance of such topics.

However, the youth presence extended further than just attendees; 11-year-old Luchia Ellul-Alimikhena performed, after singing at Butetown Carnival this year. Luchia recognises the need for ‘the Welsh Government to follow through with their plans on Black history being made mandatory in schools’.

16-year-old, Zinsi Sibanda, also performed, reading her award-winning poem. Zinsi, after achieving straight As in her GCSEs, later won the Young Carer’s Award at the Black History Wales Community Awards. She explains she was' ‘shocked to hear her name called’, I was so honoured, as it really shows that even when you don’t believe it, overcoming adversities and showcasing excellence really does not go unnoticed’.
