CULTURAL DAY AT SAINT DAVID’S COLLEGE

"Culture is deeply intertwined with identity as it shapes an individual's beliefs, values, traditions, and customs. It influences how people perceive themselves and others, their sense of belonging, and their understanding of the world "

Visiting Saint David’s College on their cultural day in February this year was truly remarkable. As someone hailing from West Africa, specifically Ghana, I was deeply impressed by the rich tapestry of culture on display, not just within the school, but reflecting the broader diversity of Wales as a whole. In Ghana, cultural day celebrations are a vibrant display of the nation's rich diversity, featuring colourful expressions of individual ethnicity, traditional cuisines, dynamic dance performances, and a strong sense of community unity.

The event showcased a mesmerising array of cultures, with students donning traditional attire, engaging in vibrant dances, and offering cuisines that spanned continents. From Africa to Asia, the Caribbean to North America, Hispanic communities to Arab nations, the event was a celebration of cultural diversity, weaving together a tapestry of traditions and heritage from around the globe.

I believe institutions should host cultural days to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and promote understanding among students and staff. These events provide opportunities for individuals to share their cultural heritage, traditions, and experiences, contributing to a more vibrant and cohesive community within the institution. Cultural days also offer valuable learning experiences, helping to break down stereotypes, broaden perspectives, and cultivate respect for different cultures. Additionally, they can serve as platforms for showcasing artistic talents, culinary delights, and unique customs, enriching the overall educational experience for everyone involved.
