Tell us who you are and what you do?
I'm Nathan Palmer, a tailor, and I run Nathan Palmer Bespoke, located in Castle Building, Penarth.
I started studying fashion design in 2007 and began my business in 2010, initially focusing on casual clothing items. However, I transitioned to making suits in 2015 and officially launched the store in 2017. Along the way, I explored other design disciplines like graphic design, interior design, and art media design, all of which were relevant and helped me understand various aspects of design. I've always had a passion for fashion, so I decided to pursue that path. I'm a visual learner, capable of taking inspiration and adding my artistic touch to it. I appreciate different styles and colors, and I enjoy creating bespoke items that my clients find desirable.
Is all of your work bespoke pieces?
No, often I create bespoke pieces, but I also incorporate original designs with different accents to make them unique.
Who would be your typical client?
My clients can range from 25 to 65 years old, depending on their needs. Some pieces are functional, while others are unique, one-of-a-kind creations that speak for themselves. Clothing makes a powerful statement, and it's a pleasure to dress someone in a way that brings their individual personality to life. Statement pieces are exceptional because they allow people to express themselves without saying a word. I've built strong relationships with my clients, and they trust my vision and ideas. I take pride in giving my clients a complete experience, ensuring they receive my full attention from the initial consultation to the final piece. I believe it's essential to see clients as more than just a source of income; each one is unique, and I strive to provide them with undivided attention. I consider it a privilege that each client entrusts me with their time, and I aim to ensure that their time is well-rewarded with a piece they truly love.
My parents hail from Jamaica, and my Nan traveled on the Windrush, still celebrated as part of that movement. They arrived here in the late 60s and early 70s. Both of them embarked on careers in the medical industry but initially faced some challenges due to their skin color. While there wasn't overt hostility, it did take time for them to settle into their roles. Through their unwavering perseverance and determination, they were able to overcome these obstacles and achieve success and growth in their professions.
Where do you get your inspiration form?
As the world is a much smaller place nowadays, I can get inspiration from anywhere. Just by looking on Instagram, I could come across an image from Japan that could spark interest. Inspiration really is everywhere; you just have to be open to it.
Do you make pieces that clients can wear again?
I believe so. I design pieces in a way that, although they could be for a special occasion, I make sure that all elements of the design process are functional and will have longevity. I love to think ahead when I am designing and see the piece as something the client will want to wear again, perhaps as their go-to tuxedo or even for a date night. All my pieces are hand-stitched from start to finish. The process begins with the tailor drawing a unique block pattern, which is made to follow the characteristics of the client’s body shape and measurements. Using this process allows me to follow the curves and contours of the client’s body shape. Next comes the customization of accents or accessories, where I can individualize the piece to the client’s specific requirements, such as the spacing between buttons and the angle of the pockets.
What word of wisdom can you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
I would say that the main thing is perseverance. You're likely to encounter many 'no's before you hear 'yes,' but it's all about having the resilience to keep going. I believe it's essential to maintain a positive frame of mind and stay focused on the end goal. Remember, one day, the small raindrops will create a big pond. I began by cutting cloth on my kitchen table and welcoming clients into my home. I adapted to whatever I needed to do to make my dream come true.
“It's about drive. Ideas are just ideas; without the energy behind them, you won't be in alignment for things to manifest.”
What has been the most exciting experience of your career so far?
There have been many, like attending London fashion week. But I think the most exciting moment I so far, was the honour of creating a suit for Sam Warburton which he wore when he received his OBE from the Queen. Although I still have many other aspirations such as dressing Idris Elba.
What does the future look like for Nathan Palmer Bespoke?
I want to continue to my build client base, and venture into creating an everyday collection, I want to continue to hold annual fashion shows, which I enjoy preparing for and just keep going, being open to new ideas and opportunities. Fashion does full circles but there is always room for new concepts.
