Stars Are Born In Wales: LLoyd Germain

Updated: Jun 27

The man with big ambitions, new Welsh welterweight boxing champion, Lloyd Germain, who is currently in camp for his next fight, but still found time to talk to Xcellence Magazine, about his career so far and future prospects.

Who are the people who inspire you?

I’ve got lots of inspiration, most importantly, I’ve got lots of people I do this for. Obviously, I fight for myself, but I’ve got my children, a great family, and my girlfriend, but every time I step into the ring, I’m on my own, but these people are on my back. I do it to benefit them and make each one of them proud, that is worth more than winning.

Tell us more about your trainer, Tony Borg, you said you wanted to take certain fights and Tony would say ‘not now’, you must have a strong trustworthy relationship?

I can’t thank Tony enough for what he done for me. Like I said, all I can do is get myself in the best condition physically and mentally. Tony, with my manager, is there to direct me on my career path, to pick the right fights at the right time. Obviously, there’s no point in me saying I want to fight world champions straightaway, although even in my head I think I could beat them right now. You’ve got to get in the right position to be able to do that. Tony is a massive inspiration for me. Before walking to the ring on my previous fight, winning the Welsh title, he said to me, “don’t let me down now”. When I got the belt around me in the ring after winning the fight, I said to him, “I was never going to let you down” and that’s something as a fighter how you pay your trainer back. I’m very fortunate to have him on my team, I’m in a great stable at St Joseph’s in Newport with a lot of great boxers, where we push ourselves daily and the sky is the limit.

What does it take to maintain a championship mindset?

You have to have that championship mindset, as the mind is such a powerful thing. I believe you can achieve anything you want if you put your mind to it. As I have said before, my goal was to become Welsh champion and I ticked that box. Next step is getting into the top twenty in Britain, while steadily moving up the ranking, which sounds good. But, I want to be the number one in Britain, then go on to be the number one in the world.

"It feel's great to represent your country, but now I want to represent the World"

You have a great mindset, talk to us about what makes a champion mindset?

Well, most importantly, it is believing in yourself as they say, seeing is believing. You got to see these things manifest into what you want. I never put on a pair of boxing gloves in the professional game just to make up the numbers. Every time I step into the ring I want to win. I set myself big goals and I’m on the road to achieving them. Most importantly, your mind is your strongest weapon, you have to be focused and stay on the right track.

What are your thoughts on becoming Welsh champion and prospects on becoming world champion?

It feels great, first box has been ticked, it’s an honour to become champion of my country, but the main goal is to become world champion, and we won’t be satisfied until we achieve that goal.

For people that don’t know you, give us a background on who you are, who is Lloyd Germain?

Obviously, I am Cardiff born and bred, massive boxing fan who is a professional boxer and a keen family man, that’s my life at the moment.

So, you are 7-0 as a professional how many amateur fights have you had?

I’ve only had two amateur fights but have been in the gym from a young age, but didn’t really knuckle down to it, to be honest. I wasn’t turning up to any amateur stages as fights wouldn’t be pulling through, and it didn’t really happen for me as an amateur, but we don’t really look at that in the professional game. I’m 7-0 Welsh champion and willing to grow on the foundation we have already set.

"The most important thing, is to believe in yourself!"
